New Communities Achievement Team - NCAT

All Schools and Academies  

The New Communities Achievement Team (NCAT) currently receives some funding from School Forum to provide support for EAL New Arrival children in Derby schools. NCAT delivers one half a day support session each week for every primary school in Derby which participate in supporting the Primary Support Strategy for EAL (English as an Additional Language) New Arrivals. The support is delivered in the form of language/curriculum in class support, admission/induction support, home/school liaison support, attendance monitoring and interpreting /translation service provision.

The demand from schools / academies across the city for support is increasing and the existing funding arrangements and capacity within the NCAT cannot meet these demands. We recognise that schools want initial support for the induction of new arrival EAL pupils, support in working with parents of new arrivals, training provision, mentoring, EAL / ESOL support, improving the engagement and achievement of pupils from Roma backgrounds and also support with interpreting and translation. We have tried to meet these needs in the following eleven packages of sold service.

A choice of 11 Packages: 

Package 1 - Support for the Induction of EAL New Arrival Pupils 

(maintained schools, academies and out of authority schools – 4 half days per term / 12 hours)

The New Communities Achievement Team will provide the equivalent of four half day sessions of induction support for EAL new arrival pupils. This could be in the form of in-class language/curriculum support, mentoring, and home – school liaison, supporting a meeting with parents in school or out of class 1-2-1 / small group language/curriculum support.

Package 2 - Raising the attainment and attendance of New Arrival Pupils 

(maintained schools, academies and out of authority schools – 12 half days per term)

The New Communities Achievement Team will provide support for underachieving EAL new arrival pupils/students equivalent to 6 days a term (or 12 half days). The NCAT will work closely with schools, families and parents/ carers as well as the EWO service to ensure high attendance and provide a combination of in-class / out of class, 1-2-1/small group language/curriculum support and family liaison support to help raise attainment.

Package 3 - Staff Training/INSET 

(offered as one hour staff meeting or half day INSET)

The New Communities Achievement Team will provide bespoke training to schools/academies and colleagues based around the experience of new arrival EAL communities, cultural awareness, basic language training and familiarisation, strategies to increase attendance and raise attainment.

Package 4 - Interpreting and Translation service 

The New Communities Achievement Team will provide an interpreting and translation service to schools and academies. The service is available in following languages:

Package 5 - Polish and Russian GCSE tuition 

(maintained schools, academies and out of authority schools – 10 hours)

In order to fulfil the requirements of the GCSE exam, a student must not only possess clear and detailed syllabus knowledge, but must also have mastered writing and question-answering techniques, such as selection, planning and timing. It is a combination of knowledge and technique that enables a student to do well and our preparation courses address both, ensuring that your students have all the tools they require.

Students are helped to understand and learn the material and acquire the ability to manipulate it under exam conditions. The support package will cover all the syllabus topics, exam questions, common mistakes analysis as well as a mock exam.

Package 6 - Introductory language course of Slovak, Czech, Polish, Latvian, Russian and Roma Language 

(Please choose from a 5 hours course or 10 hours course)

This is aimed at:

Package 7 - Intensive 1-1 ESOL tuition

(Please choose from a 15 hours programme or 30 hours programme)

This is a comprehensive, language-based programme designed to help with the transition between studying in a home language and studying in Britain. As a part of the package we will carry out an initial assessment which establishes student's proficiency before delivering a course best suited to their level of English, covering reading, writing, speaking & listening, grammar and vocabulary.

Package 8 - SATS preparation for EAL learner 

(maintained schools, academies and out of authority schools – 3 x one hour sessions)

Exam techniques taught and test procedures are explained in the first language of learners from Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland, Latvia, Russia and Estonia to ensure the best possible outcomes for these pupils.

Package 9 - Mentoring of EAL pupils 

(maintained schools, academies and out of authority schools – 12 x one hour sessions)

1-1 or small group mentoring of EAL learners, who are at risk of exclusion, or struggling to settle in, aiming to improve attitude towards learning, improve attendance, boost confidence and raise aspirations that will result in better learning outcomes for these students. This is achieved through exploration of needs, motivations, desires, skills and thought processes to assist the learners in making real, lasting change.

Package 10 - Improved engagement with parents from EAL New Arrival Communities 

Schools work hard to forge effective partnerships with parents as research consistently shows that parental involvement in children’s education has significant and lasting benefits. Although there is no shared definition of parental involvement, helping parents to become more involved in the life of the school brings many advantages: strengthening home-school links, building enduring partnerships and enhancing the school community. There are some EAL New Arrival families who might not understand that schools in Britain see education as a shared responsibility between school and home. Helping them understand how the education system works and how to support their child’s education is crucial to the success of their children.

NCAT can deliver improved communication and involvement of EAL New Arrival families with schools through interpreting and translation service, home visits, phone calls, attendance monitoring and safeguarding checks as well as supporting the families to attend school meetings / events (parents evenings, meetings with schools staff, assemblies, schools sport days etc)

Package 11 - Overcoming barriers to educational engagement and attainment of Roma pupils in primary and secondary schools 

The New Communities Achievement Team will provide support for underachieving Roma pupils/students implementing a wide range of appropriate strategies and interventions for improving Roma pupils’ attendance and attainment, improving inclusion and reducing fixed term and permanent exclusions. The support package includes provision of language/ curriculum support, interpreting / translation support, keeping track of pupils from highly mobile families, building up good relationships with Roma families, raising parents’ awareness of schools’ expectations, developing parents understanding of how to access universal services, addressing safeguarding issues, enhancing parents knowledge of English, attendance monitoring and mentoring.
