Early Years Foundation Stage Profile Assessments 2019
Early Years Foundation Stage Profile Moderation 2018-19
The Standards and Testing Agency (STA) requires the Local Authority (LA) to ensure that practitioners make accurate judgements about each Reception child’s attainment in the final term of the Reception year, and to ensure that profile outcomes are reliable as a result of internal school moderation and LA moderation processes. The STA also provides a helpful checklist of the roles and responsibilities of headteachers in this process.
Whilst moderation visits verify a practitioner’s ability to make accurate assessments in line with national exemplifications, these visits take place during the summer term, which is too late for schools to review their school standardisation across all the early learning goals, ensure that it is in line with national standards, and reflects the school demographic. The professional dialogue within the agreement trialling sessions provided by the LA will help practitioners to make accurate assessments.
Evaluations from teachers, headteachers and the Derby EYFS Profile moderation team, indicated that there should be agreement trialling opportunities for all areas of learning and the following is our offer to you:
- Personal, social and emotional development on Thursday 17 January at the Kedleston Road Training and Development Centre (this session will be led by Sherida Morgan and Lorraine Mann)
- Literacy on Wednesday 30 January at the Kedleston Road Training and Development Centre
- Mathematics on Thursday 14 February at the Kedleston Road Training and Development Centre
- Understanding the world on Thursday 28 February at the Kedleston Road Training and Development Centre
- Expressive arts and design on Wednesday 20 March at the Kedleston Road Training and Development Centre
Feedback from practitioners also indicated that afternoon sessions were preferred due to morning teaching commitments and the ease of afternoon cover so sessions will run on the above revised dates and at the following times:
- 12.30 - 14.00
- 14.00 - 15.30
- 15.30 - 17.00
If places fill for the afternoon sessions or some schools would prefer a morning session, we shall arrange a morning session from 09.00 – 10.30.
In order to prepare for the sessions, trainers invite you to choose three children who have a range of attainment. Practitioners will work in small groups to share the children’s learning and their interim judgements that will be evidenced by your knowledge of the children, contributions from a range of perspectives, including the child, the parents and other relevant adults and the outcomes of your observations of their self-initiated learning. Your evidence will not necessarily be formally recorded or documented.
Please bring your EYFSP Handbook (the 2018 version if the 2019 Handbook has not been published) and the exemplification materials to the training session and you will find it helpful to bring a copy of the ‘End of KS1 teacher assessment frameworks’ to support dialogue about ‘exceeding’ judgements.
Reception teachers and other adults working across the Foundation Stage and Year 1 will find these sessions helpful. There will be a small charge of £10 per person for each session to cover the cost of the moderators’ time and the venue.
