Effective health and safety training is essential to make sure everyone has the necessary skills, knowledge and information to do their jobs safely. This page explains our policy and competency framework for health and safety training. It also includes details of current health and safety training arrangements and courses.
Health and safety training policy
The Health and Safety Training Policy explains the Council’s competency-based approach to health and safety training. It includes mandatory training for managers, including head teachers and senior managers, and employees in certain job roles.
The Individual health and safety training needs assessment form is for managers to use to identify and record the health and safety training needs of their employees. The Health and safety training matrix template can be used to record and monitor employees' health and safety training. It includes a blank template and a worked example.
Mandatory health and safety training
Employees in certain job roles are now required to do some mandatory courses on important health and safety topics. See our Health and Safety Training Policy for more details, which has a health and safety training competency matrix. This shows those job roles within schools that are required to do the mandatory training.
We’ve put together a programme of course dates for this training, and will add more when necessary. To check whether places are available on specific dates contact us on 640748.
Course summaries for the four mandatory management courses are now available online. Each summary is password protected, but we’ll give the details to delegates when they attend the relevant course. Email us if you’ve lost your password. You’ll need an up-to-date version of flash player installed on your computer to view them.

Chief Officer Group has agreed that cancellation charges can be made for delegates who fail to attend courses without any, or insufficient, notice. This is in line with normal practice by training providers.
Charges will apply even if you don’t usually pay for health and safety courses. The charges are:
- 50% of the current course fee for cancellations within two weeks of the course.
- 100% of the fee for ‘no shows’ and cancellations within two days of the course.
